The Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û-Japan relationship: collaboration in higher education, research and innovation
This report assesses the current levels of research collaboration between the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û and Japan and suggests future opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.
Traditionally, the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û and Japan share a strong relationship in business, diplomacy, science and technology. Undoubtedly, there is scope to build on these strong foundations to increase the scale, scope and impact of our research and innovation collaborations.Â

- Describes the key features of the Japanese higher education and research landscape.Â
- Highlights the important role of universities in the domestic R&D environment in both Japan and the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û.Â
- Outlines current levels of collaboration in the context of both countries’ domestic R&D performance. Â
- Expands on the existing opportunities for collaboration in science and innovation and explores future possibilities in a bilateral and a multilateral context.
Case studies of programmes and funding opportunities that support Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û–Japan collaboration are included at the end of this report to highlight their positive impact on research and innovation.
